Michael A. Lebel AIF®, Co-Founder - 1983

Michael A. Lebel

Michael A. Lebel is a lifelong resident of Maine. With a B.S. degree from the University of Maine in Orono, Michael is a licensed Life & Health agent and a Registered Representative with ValMark Securities, Inc.

For over thirty years, Michael's core focus has been on retirement plan servicing, with a particular emphasis on employee education and the employer due diligence process relative to the retirement plan's investment platform.

With a vast knowledge of the design, implementation and communication of 401(k) and 403(b) plans, as well as his charismatic approach to his meetings, Michael has met with thousands of employees regarding asset allocation and retirement savings through the years. In that time, he has established a proven track record of increasing participation and employee awareness.

On the employer level, Mike provides the annual due diligence review for his plan sponsors that includes an analysis of the management company stewardship grading, a comprehensive fee analysis and performance benchmarking.

In recognition of his experience and expertise in the retirement plan arena, Michael is frequently asked to speak at vendor conferences and sits on a number of industry-level advisory boards.

Michael recently attained his Accredited Investment Fiduciary designation.

Michael enjoys playing guitar, fishing, woodworking and spending time on his boat.

Philip E. Harriman CLU®, ChFC®, RFC, Co-Founder - 1983

HON. Philip E. Harriman, CLU, CHFC, RFC

For over thirty years, Phil Harriman has worked with family-held and nonprofit businesses in the areas of business continuation arrangements, negotiation of compensation packages, and retirement and estate planning. He started his career with Maine Governor James B. Longley's insurance agency in 1977. In 1983, he and Michael A. Lebel formed an independent insurance and investment brokerage firm - Lebel & Harriman, LLP.

Phil is a graduate of Husson University in Bangor, Maine earning a B.S. degree in Business Administration, majoring in Insurance. He was awarded the Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant designations from The American College in Bryn Mawr, PA. He is a licensed and bonded life insurance consultant.

In 1989, Phil was admitted into membership of the prestigious Association of Advanced Life Underwriting. Phil is a Qualifying member of MDRT, an international association of financial and life insurance advisors. From 2003 to 2008, he was a member of the MDRT Executive Committee, serving as its President in 2007. Phil is a past executive committee member of the Maine Estate Planning Council. In 2000, he was the recipient of the J. Putnam Stevens Award for his outstanding contributions to the life insurance profession.

Phil has spoken to international audiences worldwide including Australia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Brazil, Europe, Philippines, Canada and Thailand. He has also appeared on CNN Financial, Sky Tel and Bloomberg Radio Network.

He serves on numerous boards including Husson University. He is a former director of the LIFE Foundation and the American College Foundation. He is a former board member of Mid Coast Health Services, Cancer Community Center, Ingraham Volunteers and a former Co-Director of the Yarmouth Clam Festival. Phil's civic involvement includes serving four terms representing the 23rd District in the Maine Senate.

Phil's hobbies include fly fishing, skeet, jogging and golf.

Laurie M. Reed Managing Director, Retirement Plans - 1990

Laurie M. Reed

Laurie M. Reed joined Lebel & Harriman, LLP in 1990.

With a B.A. degree in Economics from Colby College, Laurie worked as a Defined Contribution Plan Administrator for New England Life. She subsequently accepted a position with Mutual Benefit Life as a Regional Service Representative and covered the New England territory, providing enrollment support to her clients and financial advisors. Lebel & Harriman, LLP was one of her largest brokers.

Laurie's expertise is in the design, implementation and management of corporate retirement plans. She has been responsible for coordinating all plan-related services for the firm's block of retirement plan business for 23 years.

In January of 2008, Laurie was promoted to Managing Director of Retirement Plans and in August of 2009 was named as a Partner with the firm. Laurie directs all facets of the retirement plan business, including marketing, implementation, on-going service, communication and education as well as managing the firm's internal operations.

Laurie holds Series 6 and Series 63 securities licenses, Life & Health Insurance licenses and is a Registered Representative of Valmark Securities.

Laurie is very active in several booster groups at Greely High School, is a Team Leader for the Cumberland Community Food Pantry and serves as Missions Chair for the Congregational Church in Cumberland. She enjoys skiing, cooking and reading.

Rebecca A. Burchill CLU®, ChFC®, Managing Director, Life Insurance & Annuities - 2000

Rebecca A. Burchill

Rebecca A. Burchill joined Lebel & Harriman, LLP in 2000 and was named partner in 2017.

A graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a B.A. in Communications and Psychology, Rebecca started her career with a national insurance carrier in 1996.

Her expertise is in the design and underwriting of life, disability and long-term care insurance as well as annuities. Rebecca has the unique ability to make the complexities of these financial instruments easy to understand for our clients. In 2012 Rebecca earned the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation from The American College. The CLU® designation is the premier credential in the insurance industry requiring knowledge of all aspects of insurance planning, estate and retirement issues, taxation, business insurance and risk management.

In January of 2015, she earned the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®) designation from the American College. Practitioners with the ChFC® designation are trained to develop and implement comprehensive financial plans for individuals, businesses, and organizations.

Rebecca holds Series 6 and Series 63 Securities licenses, Life & Health Insurance licenses and is a Registered Representative of ValMark Securities, Inc. She serves on the board of the Maine Estate Planning Council.

Michelle M. Romano Financial Advisor, Managing Director, Investments - 2003

Michelle M Romano

Michelle joined Lebel & Harriman, LLP as a Financial Advisor in 2003 and was named Partner in 2017.

With a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Southern Maine, Michelle began her career at Dean Witter Reynolds in New Haven, CT. She then transferred to the Portland, Maine branch of Morgan Stanley where she obtained the designation of Retirement Planning Specialist. She has been in the financial services industry since 1995 and holds her Series 7, Series 63, Series 65, Series 31 and Life & Health Insurance licenses.

As a licensed Investment Advisor, Michelle's expertise is in personal wealth management. As a Fiduciary, consulting and advisory services include financial planning, retirement income planning, investment selection and oversight, cash management, and ongoing due diligence. With over 20 years of industry experience she is able to create unique relationships with each customer to ensure their specific needs are met.

Instrumental in the development of the personal investment management services we provide, in 2008 Michelle was promoted to Managing Director of the Investment division. In addition to managing over $100 million of assets, she oversees all facets of personal investment management including client service, operations and compliance.

Michelle lives in Scarborough and enjoys spending time with her children, skiing at Sugarloaf, and entertaining family and friends.

Jennifer L. Breton AIF®, CPFA, Accredited Investment Fiduciary - 2007

Jennifer L. Breton

Jennifer joined Lebel & Harriman in 2007 and was named Partner in 2017. She is a Registered Investment Advisor with over 20 years’ experience and has earned the Certified Plan Fiduciary Advisor and Accredited Investment Fiduciary designations.

Jennifer provides consulting and fiduciary advisory services to ERISA 401(k) and 403(b) Plan sponsors, working directly with HR and Finance professionals to satisfy fiduciary obligations and ensure retirement plan excellence at the most reasonable price. Her expertise is in the areas of governance, investment advice (menu selection and monitoring), QDIA analysis, RFP project management and fee benchmarking. She and her teammates collaborate with each client, and their chosen recordkeeper, to also deliver supporting services such as administrative and audit assistance, Plan implementation/transition management, Committee training on fiduciary best practices, non-qualified deferred compensation consulting and customized participant education.

She holds Series 6, Series 63 and 65 Securities licenses, Life & Health Insurance licenses and was recognized by Financial Times as a Top 401(k) Financial Adviser (2015, 2016) and nominated as one of the country’s top 50 female advisers (National Association of Plan Advisors -NAPA) in 2015.

Jennifer serves on several Boards, including Maine Employee Benefits Council (past President) and Evergreen Credit Union. She lives in Yarmouth with her partner, Mike, and enjoys fishing, skiing, traveling and time with both family and friends.

Josh J. Chase CFP®, Financial Advisor - 2012

Josh J. Chase

Josh joined Lebel & Harriman, LLP as a Retirement Plan Advisor in 2012 and was named Partner in 2017. He is a Certified Financial Planner™ and has over 17 years’ experience in financial services. Josh serves as a co-fiduciary advisor to retirement plans and works closely with plan sponsors and their employees.

Josh grew up in Maine and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a degree in Mass Communication. He holds his Series 6, Series 7 and Series 66 Securities licenses, Life & Health Insurance license and is a Registered Representative of Valmark Securities and an Investment Advisor Representative of Valmark Advisors Inc.

Josh is active in his community and serves on the boards of The Maine Society of Financial Service Professionals, Junior Achievement of Maine, Portland Little League and Portland Youth Football. He also volunteers in the classroom through Junior Achievement, volunteers with the Southern Maine Area Agency on Aging Money Minders Program and is a youth sports coach.

Christopher A. Klimash Financial Advisor - 2015

Chris recently joined Lebel & Harriman after 15 years of Personal Wealth Management service. While working at Morgan Stanley and Royal Bank of Canada, Chris was responsible for the life and wealth planning needs of his clients. Chris’s primary focus is on personal retirement income planning and individual investment management. He provides wealth management consistently through five steps: understanding, analysis, solutions, delivery and commitment. Chris understands the importance of “equal but different” solutions in both the accumulation and distribution phases of life. This process results in an investment plan that strives to take advantage of every opportunity for growth, while protecting our clients’ wealth from undue risk.

Chris has spent most of his life in Maine and graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Economics.

Chris holds his Series 7, Series 66 and Life & Health Insurance Licenses.

Chris is a member of Brunswick Rotary Club, Mid Coast Hospital’s Planned Giving Advisory Council and dedicates numerous hours each year to youth sports in Brunswick. When not working or coaching, Chris enjoys spending time with his family recreating in our great state.

Matthew L. Arey Retirement Plan Analyst - 2013

Matthew L. Arey

Our Retirement Plans Team added a new position in 2013. We are pleased to welcome Matt Arey as our first Retirement Plan Analyst.

Matt will support members of the Retirement Plans division in the preparation of analytical reports, including but not limited to gathering/entering plan metrics, generating investment reviews, conducting investment- or plan-level research and drafting comprehensive meeting minutes.

Matt graduated from Stonehill College in 2011. He has a BS in Business Administration with a Finance major and a Spanish minor. While at Stonehill, Matt was a Teaching Assistance for the college's Quantitative Analysis course, and he was a book editor for a text book on Quantitative Techniques. Before coming to Lebel & Harriman, Matt spent two years in the Retail Development Program at Key Bank.

Matt enjoys volunteering for the CA$H Coalition in Portland. In his free time, Matt likes to swim, bike and run and has competed in several triathalons.

Vickie C. Bell Senior Account Manager, Retirement Plans

Vickie Bell

Vickie recently joined Lebel & Harriman after 17 years with Delhaize America/Hannaford Bros. Co. During her tenure, she was an integral member of the team that designed and administered the Company’s qualified and nonqualified retirement plans. Vickie interpreted plan provisions, evaluated and implemented new legislation, oversaw plan communications, and partnered with service providers. Prior to joining Hannaford, Vickie was an associate at Verrill Dana, LLP. Vickie looks forward to collaborating with our clients and our team to provide honest advice and inspired solutions.

Vickie is a lifelong resident of Maine. She grew up in Aroostook County, received her B.A. degree from Colby College and earned her J.D. degree from the University of Maine School of Law.

Vickie is very active in the Greely school community and currently serves on its board of directors. She enjoys attending her children’s activities, knitting and spending time on Maine’s lakes.

Julie Coleman Receptionist / Administrative Assistant – 2016

Julie Coleman

Julie recently joined Lebel & Harriman to assist the Investment Management Team. Prior to joining Lebel & Harriman, Julie worked as a Bond Underwriter and Marketing Representative for Aetna and Travelers in both Portland, ME and Charlotte, NC. While working for Travelers Julie obtained both her CPCU and AFSB designations.

Julie is a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University where she received her B.A. degree in International Business. She lives in Freeport with her husband and has recently launched her son off to college.

Julie volunteers much of her time facilitating a Freshmen girls group at Freeport High School for the organization “Seeds of Independence”. She has been a Member of the Freeport High School Renovation Committee since its inception in 2012. Julie is also on the Board of the Carrabassett Region New England Mountain Biking Association. In her free time, Julie is an avid skier and Mountain Biker and enjoys spending as much time as possible with her friends and family in the Western Maine mountains and on Casco Bay.

Emily Getchell

Emily is a Retirement Investment Counselor with over 12 years of experience in the financial profession. She is an Accredited Investment Fiduciary® and holds the FINRA Series 6, 7, 63 and 66 securities registrations. She focuses on business owners as well as individuals to create and implement financial solutions. Emily is also Life, Accident & Health insurance licensed. Prior to joining Lebel & Harriman, she worked as an Institutional Relationship Manager at Vanguard where she specialized in Endowment and Foundation investing. More recently she served as a Financial Consultant and Retirement Education Specialist in the Portland area. Emily enjoys helping people create small habits that lead to positive, measurable results over the long run.

Emily is a graduate of West Chester University with a degree in Communication Studies, French and Dance. She lives in Yarmouth with her husband and two young children. In her free time she enjoys learning about health and wellness, teaching dance classes, practicing yoga, exploring all that Maine has to offer and spending time with family.

Emily Helliesen Day joined Lebel & Harriman, LLP, in August of 2012.

Emily is a graduate of Pitzer College in Southern California, and holds a B.A. in Sociology. She has over 12 years of industry experience. Prior to joining Lebel & Harriman, Emily worked as a Retirement Plan Administrator at Benefit Strategies in Portland, and then Retirement Plan Administrator/Education Specialist for Healey & Associates, also in Portland.

As a Registered Operations & Investment Associate at Lebel & Harriman, Emily works closely with the Investment Advisors to oversee all facets of investment operations and compliance. She also enjoys working with clients one on one, preparing and implementing Financial Plans.

In October of 2016, Emily earned the Retirement Income Certified Professional (RICP®) designation from the American College. Practitioners with the RICP® designation focus on working with clients who are transitioning from the asset accumulation phase of their lives, to create a sustainable retirement. This includes Social Security analysis, distribution strategies, risk management, and creating an effective retirement income plan.

Emily holds Series 6 and Series 63 Securities registrations, Life & Health Insurance licenses and is a Registered Representative of Valmark Securities. Emily is also a Notary in the State of Maine.

Emily is on the board of the Greater Portland Chapter of the New England Mountain Biking Association, and can often be found riding her mountain or road bike, paddle-boarding, skiing, running, or hiking with her family.

Amy Hutnak

Amy recently joined Lebel & Harriman and is responsible for providing primary phone coverage and for greeting each client who visits our offices. She also acts as an office "generalist" and supports all of our divisions.

Amy comes from a background of retail and customer service.

Jason E. McCormick MSF, Registered Client Service Associate - 2013

Jason McCormick

Jason joined Lebel & Harriman’s Insurance Division in June of 2013, bringing with him practical and managerial experience in the banking and wealth management industries. Jason is primarily responsible for supporting all facets of Lebel & Harriman’s Insurance Division. He handles client inquiries, manages all new business and underwriting, and facilitates the preparation of proposals, and client reviews.

Jason is also a member of Lebel & Harriman’s Investment Committee, and works with the all three divisions to develop asset selection procedures.

Licenses include Series 6 and Series 63 Securities licenses, a Maine Life Insurance license, and is a Registered Representative of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.

Jason grew up in Maine and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono. There he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and assisted with faculty research projects. Jason has also earned a Master of Science in Finance (MSF) with a concentration in investments/securities from Southern New Hampshire University. During his time at Southern New Hampshire University, Jason was a member of the Sigma Alpha Pi academic honor society.

Jason enjoys hiking and orienteering, traveling, cooking and oenology, woodworking, restoring antique houses, and other outdoor activities. Jason also enjoys boating and has been a member of the United States Power Squadrons since 1995.

Sara E. McLaughlin Consultant - 2010

Sara E. McLaughlin

Sara joined Lebel & Harriman, LLP in 2010. Sara began her career after attaining her Masters of Business Administration, Finance, from the University of Massachusetts in 1997. She started as a Financial Analyst with US TeleCenters/View Tech, Inc. before moving to Maine in 1999. She then became a Finance Manager for Wright Express and began working independently as a consultant to multiple non-profit organizations.

Sara consults with our team to create customized Financial Plans, which in turn will provide our clients with the pertinent information necessary to make significant decisions regarding retirement and estate planning. Her focus on the critical details of each client's situation enables her to design a plan that truly reflects their unique circumstances.

Sara is a volunteer for Village Elementary School. She previously served on the board for the Southern Maine Community Recreation Center and was a committee member for St. Anne's Church.

Sara enjoys running and spending time with her family and friends.

Nathan Moody Retirement Plan Analyst - 2016

Nathan Moody

Nate joins Lebel & Harriman as the newest member of our Retirement Plans Team. He will support Matt and the other members of the team in the preparation of analytical reports, fiduciary meeting minutes and the conducting of investment research.

Nate, a Gorham native, graduated from Bowdoin College in 2016. He has a BA in Economics with a Minor in Mathematics. While at Bowdoin, Nate was a member of the Bowdoin College Financial Society as well as several championship intramural teams. Nate also worked at a local restaurant, Scarlet Begonias, and tutored at Harriet Beecher Stowe Middle School. Prior to Lebel & Harriman, Nate worked at Moody’s Collision Centers as a General Contractor for the construction and renovations of several new buildings.

Nate continues to volunteer at Preble Street Soup Kitchen, as well as playing pickup basketball with the kids at Long Creek Youth Development Center. Nate enjoys playing golf, boating, snowmobiling and camping.

Caroline L. Powers Office & Human Resources Administrator – 2015

Caroline See

Caroline is responsible for overall office management, bookkeeping and benefits administration for the firm.

Caroline joins us directly from Unum Life Insurance Company where she performed a broad range of tasks associated with all lines of coverage, assisted Brokers and Plan Administrators with product understanding, and issue mitigation.

Previously, Caroline administered Corporate Trust accounts globally for Wells Fargo Bank in Salt Lake City, Utah. In addition, Caroline has 15 years of financial and securities knowledge and experience.

Caroline enjoys days at the beach, camping, playing golf, movies, and spending time with her family and friends.
