Michael A. LebelCo-Founder - 1983
Michael A. LebelMichael A. Lebel is a lifelong resident of Maine. With a B.S. degree from the University of Maine in Orono, Michael is a licensed Life & Health agent and a Registered Representative with ValMark Securities, Inc.

For over thirty years, Michael’s core focus has been on retirement plan servicing, with a particular emphasis on employee education and the employer due diligence process relative to the retirement plan’s investment platform.

With a vast knowledge of the design, implementation and communication of 401(k) and 403(b) plans, as well as his charismatic approach to his meetings, Michael has met with thousands of employees regarding asset allocation and retirement savings through the years. In that time, he has established a proven track record of increasing participation and employee awareness.

On the employer level, Mike provides the annual due diligence review for his plan sponsors that includes an analysis of the management company stewardship grading, a comprehensive fee analysis and performance benchmarking.

In recognition of his experience and expertise in the retirement plan arena, Michael is frequently asked to speak at vendor conferences and sits on a number of industry-level advisory boards.

Michael enjoys playing guitar, fishing, woodworking and spending time on his boat.

Philip E. Harriman, CLU®, ChFC®, RFCCo-Founder - 1983
HON. Philip E. Harriman, CLU, CHFC, RFCFor over thirty years, Phil Harriman has worked with family-held and nonprofit businesses in the areas of retirement planning, business continuation arrangements and estate planning. He started his career with Maine Governor James B. Longley’s insurance agency in 1977. In 1983, he and Michael A. Lebel formed an independent insurance and investment brokerage firm - Lebel & Harriman, LLP.

Phil is a graduate of Husson University in Bangor, Maine earning a B.S. degree in Business Administration, majoring in Insurance. He was awarded the Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant designations from The American College in Bryn Mawr, PA. He is a licensed and bonded life insurance consultant. Banks, law firms and accounting firms often retain him for his expertise.

In 1989, Phil was admitted into membership of the prestigious Association of Advanced Life Underwriting. Phil is a Qualifying member of MDRT, an international association of financial and life insurance advisors. From 2003 to 2008, he was a member of the MDRT Executive Committee, serving as its President in 2007. Phil is a past executive committee member of the Maine Estate Planning Council. In 2000, he was the recipient of the J. Putnam Stevens Award for his outstanding contributions to the life insurance profession.

Phil has spoken to international audiences worldwide including Australia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Brazil, Europe, Philippines, Canada and Thailand. He has also appeared on CNN Financial, Sky Tel and Bloomberg Radio Network.

He serves on numerous boards including Maine Center for Creativity, Husson University and the LIFE Foundation; he is also a trustee on the American College Foundation. He is a former board member of Mid Coast Health Services, Cancer Community Center, Ingraham Volunteers and a former Co-Director of the Yarmouth Clam Festival. Phil’s civic involvement includes serving four terms representing the 23rd District in the Maine Senate.

Phil's hobbies include fly fishing, skeet, jogging and golf.

Laurie M. ReedManaging Director, Retirement Plans - 1990
Laurie M. ReedLaurie M. Reed joined Lebel & Harriman, LLP in 1990.

With a B.A. degree in Economics from Colby College, Laurie worked as a Defined Contribution Plan Administrator for New England Life. She subsequently accepted a position with Mutual Benefit Life as a Regional Service Representative and covered the New England territory, providing enrollment support to her clients and financial advisors. Lebel & Harriman, LLP was one of her largest brokers.

Laurie’s expertise is in the design, implementation and management of corporate retirement plans. She has been responsible for coordinating all plan-related services for the firm’s block of retirement plan business for almost 20 years.

In January of 2008, Laurie was promoted to Managing Director of Retirement Plans and in August of 2009 was named as a Partner with the firm. Laurie directs all facets of the retirement plan business, including marketing, implementation, on-going service, communication and education as well as managing the firm’s internal operations.

Laurie holds Life & Health Insurance licenses and is preparing for her Series 6 and Series 63 Securities licenses.

Laurie is active in the Congregational Church in Cumberland, Seacoast Swim Club and Foundation 51.  She enjoys skiing, cooking and reading.

Rebecca A. BurchillManaging Director, Life Insurance & Annuities - 2000
Rebecca A. BurchillRebecca A. Burchill joined Lebel & Harriman, LLP in 2000.

A graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a B.A. in Communications and Psychology, Rebecca accepted a position with Phoenix Mutual as a Regional Marketing Manager in Dallas, Texas and later transferred to Boston.

Her expertise is in the design and underwriting of life, disability and long-term care insurance as well as annuities. Rebecca has the unique ability to make the complexities of these financial instruments easy to understand for her clients. Her responsibilities also include assisting the partners of Lebel & Harriman, LLP in market research and analysis for client recommendations in the Key Employee Benefit, Estate and Business Continuation Planning areas.

In January of 2008, in recognition of Rebecca’s professionalism and dedication to providing exceptional client service, she was promoted to the position of Managing Director of Life Insurance & Annuities. In this capacity, she oversees all aspects of underwriting, employee supervision and client services for life, long-term care, disability income protection and annuities.

Rebecca holds Series 6 and Series 63 Securities licenses, Life & Health Insurance licenses and is a Registered Representative of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.

In her spare time Rebecca enjoys spending time with her family, cooking and reading.  In addition, she is currently studying for her Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant designations.

Michelle M. RomanoManaging Director, Investments - 2003

Michelle M RomanoMichelle joined Lebel & Harriman, LLP as a Financial Advisor in 2003.

With a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Southern Maine, Michelle began her career at Dean Witter Reynolds in New Haven, CT. She then transferred to the Portland, Maine branch of Morgan Stanley where she obtained the designation of Retirement Planning Specialist. She has been in the financial services industry since 1995 and holds her Series 7, Series 63, Series 65, Series 31 and Life & Health Insurance licenses.

Michelle’s expertise is in personal financial planning and investment management. Once a client’s short and long term goals have been established, Michelle provides a thorough review of current accounts and will create an investment portfolio designed to meet individual needs. Whether it is planning for college, accumulating assets or generating income during retirement, she works with her clients through the different phases of life.

In January 2008, Michelle was promoted to Managing Director of Investments. She oversees all facets of the investment management division, including operations and compliance.

Michelle loves spending time with her family, cooking and entertaining her family and friends.

Jennifer L. BretonAccredited Investment Fiduciary - 2007

Jennifer has worked in the financial serviJennifer L. Bretonces industry since moving to Maine in the early 1990s and is an Accredited Investment Fiduciary ®, Financial Consultant. Her core focus is corporate and individual retirement planning. Jennifer attended Wentworth Institute of Technology and studied engineering. With that attention to detail, Jennifer works with her clients to clarify their investment objectives, develop strategies, understand fiduciary responsibilities and perform comparative analysis of options.

In the corporate realm of retirement plans, Jennifer also provides ongoing fiduciary support to plan sponsors and offers all retirement plan participants "one-on-one" employee education to ensure they implement investment allocations specific to their personal goals.

Jennifer is FINRA Registered, Series 6 and 63, Life & Health Insurance licensed and an Accredited Investment Fiduciary®. She has taken life underwriting training courses and participates in annual continuing education conferences.

Jennifer currently serves as Vice President and Programs Chair of Maine Employee Benefits Council.

Deborah L WhitworthManaging Director, HR Consulting - 2008

Deborah L. Whitworth

Deborah L. Whitworth joined Lebel & Harriman, LLP in 2008.

A graduate of Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, with a B. A. in Communications, Deb began her human resources career in the offices of Kent State’s faculty association. From there, she pursued her human resources management goal by holding HR management positions with an organization focused on providing mental health services, a restaurant chain, a healthcare organization, a software developer, a pharmacy chain and a high tech company. Deb found her way to Lebel & Harriman, LLP and is the firm’s Managing Director of its newest division—human resources consulting—and brings over 25 years of human resources and management experience with her as she consults with for-profit and nonprofit organizations.

Deb’s areas of expertise include compliance and conducting comprehensive human resources audits, mandatory training, management training, coaching, counseling, performance management and improvement. She also offers training in 360 degree performance evaluations, team building and engagement, compensation plan analysis and design, conducting employee satisfaction surveys, conducting internal investigations, recruitment and helping clients build an Employer of Choice organization.

Deb's first book, You're Hired, You're Fired—A Manager's Guide to Employee Supervision, was published in 2004. She is a regular contributor of human resources related articles to HR Times and has written for Maine Biz, Portland Press Herald, Employment Times and Information Technology.

As the President and sole content provider for HRinTheUS.COM’s advisory board, she built an online human resources department and provided virtual support through the site until the organization’s IPO in 2005.

For her entire professional career, Deb has been a member of the Society for Human Resources Management. She is currently the President-Elect for the Human Resources Association of Southern Maine and has previously held the positions of Marketing Chairperson and Secretary. She served as the President of the Board of Directors for Connections for Kids from 1997 until 2008 and is currently its Secretary. Deb has also recently been named as a Director to the Board of VNA Home Health and Hospice. She has served on the Board of Trustees and has chaired the Human Resources Committee of Portland Stage Company. Deb was a Charter Member of the Board of Directors of the Maine State Council of the Society of Human Resources Management and is currently its Director of Workforce Readiness. Deb was a Board member of the Maine Association of Nonprofits for five years.

Deb likes to enjoy the fine cuisine Portland and its surrounding towns have to offer.  She also takes pleasure in snowshoeing, walking Portland's trail system, sewing and baking.

Monica E. KnightRetirement Investment Counselor - 2010

Monica E. KnightMonica E. Knight joined Lebel & Harriman, LLP in 2010.

With 10 years of experience, Monica began her career as a part-time teller during high school.  After graduating, she continued in the financial field as a Customer Service Representative, an Assistant Manager for a local bank, and then moved to McDonald Investments as a Registered Investment Associate.  When McDonald Investments merged with UBS Financial Services, Inc., Monica remained in her position and earned her supervisory licenses.

Monica is responsible for providing investment education and general retirement planning services to our retirement plan participants over the phone and in both group and individual settings.

Monica attained her General Securities Representative license (Series 7), Uniform Combined State Law license (Series 66), and General Securities Sales Supervisor license (Series 9/10).  She is also Life & Health Insurance licensed.

Monica enjoys spending her spare time hiking, reading, bicycling, spending time with her family and renovating her house.

Sara E. McLaughlinConsultant - 2010

Sara E. McLaughlinSara joined Lebel & Harriman, LLP in 2010. Sara began her career after attaining her Masters of Business Administration, Finance, from the University of Massachusetts in 1997. She started as a Financial Analyst with US TeleCenters/View Tech, Inc. before moving to Maine in 1999. She then became a Finance Manager for Wright Express and began working independently as a consultant to multiple non-profit organizations.

Sara consults with our team to create customized Financial Plans, which in turn will provide our clients with the pertinent information necessary to make significant decisions regarding retirement and estate planning. Her focus on the critical details of each client's situation enables her to design a plan that truly reflects their unique circumstances.

Sara is a volunteer for Village Elementary School. She previously served on the board for the Southern Maine Community Recreation Center and was a committee member for St. Anne's Church.

Sara enjoys running and spending time with her family and friends.

Lesli G. PikeSenior Investment Administrator - 2008

Lesli is a Maine native who attended the University of Rhode Island where she studied Political Science and Spanish. She began her career in 1991 with Advest, Inc.  In 1994, she accepted a position as a Client Service Associate with Kidder, Peabody in Portland, ME.  In 1997, Lesli was promoted to Regional Administrator for the NE Regional Manager of UBS PaineWebber in Portland; in 2000 her position relocated her to Boston, MA.  In 2002, she returned to Portland and worked for RBC Dain Rauscher and HM Payson prior to joining the Lebel & Harriman team in 2008.

As the Senior Investment Administrator, Lesli is responsible for supporting all facets of the Investment Division of the firm. She handles day-to-day inquiries, processes all new business and assists in the preparation of proposals and client reviews.  In addition, Lesli is responsible for managing and maintaining all of the firm’s compliance files.

Lesli is a devoted volunteer in her community.  She loves to travel, especially to Spain where she spends time with close friends.  She also enjoys cooking, (Spanish cuisine), gardening, reading, the arts and spending time with her friends, family and pets.

Following her graduation from the University of Maine, and two years as a summer intern at Lebel & Harriman, Michael’s daughter Caitlin joined the firm full time as our Customer Service Representative/Receptionist. In this capacity, Caitlin provides both support to all of the divisions of the firm as well as primary phone coverage.
